Em transformed the culture of our organization during the pandemic when morale was low. They facilitated daily online workshops to promote connection.

Brian Russell

CEO, Company

I am awed by Em’s inherent capacity to distill the complex and render accessible and engaging material that learners often resist.

Em’s abstract reasoning is in the 99th percentile, they get up to speed on complex issues quickly and add value right away.

Hi! I’m Em Cooper

I’m a consultant and stand-up comedian with 18+ years of experience in comedy, independent media, non-profits, tourism and care work.

Change is constant through all of the sectors I have worked in.

Situation: In 2019, The Tyee Online Magazine was looking to grow reader contributions as a main source of revenue in a tumultuous and shrinking media sector disrupted by social media, ‘pivot to video’ and corporate concentration. Then, a pandemic happened.

What I contributed: Flexible project management in a shifting sector, strategic online and IRL events & compassionate relationship management for stakeholders & 6,000+ donors during polarized times.

Specifics:

  • Sourced vendors, created presentations & assessed ROI for online/live events
  • Evaluated audience data & engagement tactics; contributed to developing reader & donor retention strategies as part of Audience Development team
  • Wrote 100+ pages of documentation and led training curriculum for Salesforce implementation
  • Initiated online audience surveys and interviews; synthesized the data into reports
  • Communicated and built workflows in Slack for efficient remote team work
  • Researched and implemented donor response ticketing system to scale service

Situation: In 2011, United Way of Halifax Region underwent a multi-year, stakeholder-led strategic overhaul to make measurable impact and to stay relevant as online giving and Kickstarter shifted the charitable landscape.

What I contributed: A broad range of facilitation and synthesis skills to take complex and contradictory community conversations and integrate them into a plan of action.

Specifics:

  • Facilitated contentious meetings using humour to build buy-in
  • Provided graphic facilitation to demonstrate progress and milestones and to build consensus
  • Built relationships internally and externally to invite participation and investment in the process
  • Synthesized and harvested notes from community feedback sessions to find themes and patterns
  • Assisted in development of outcomes framework for community investment
  • Prepared clear documents for volunteers to make decisions
